Shaping a Nut Blank

How to fit an oversized nut blank to your instrument

Shaping a Nut Blank

Tools Needed

  • Flat needle files (various widths)
  • Nut slotting files (gauged to your string sizes)
  • Fine sandpaper (220, 400, 600 grit)
  • Calipers or ruler
  • Pencil for marking
  • Flat surface for sanding

Safety Warnings

  • Always file away from your body
  • Work slowly - material removal is permanent
  • Wear eye protection when filing

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Measure your existing nut

Use calipers to measure the width, height, and depth of your existing nut or nut slot. Record these dimensions carefully.

2

Mark the blank

Transfer your measurements to the blank using a pencil. The blank is intentionally oversized, so you'll be removing material to reach your target dimensions.

3

Shape the width

Sand the blank on a flat surface to achieve the correct width. Check frequently against the nut slot for fit.

4

Shape the depth

Sand the depth (front-to-back dimension) to match your slot. The nut should fit snugly without force.

5

Set the height

Leave the height oversized initially. Final height adjustment comes after string slots are cut.

6

Cut string slots

Using gauged nut slotting files, cut slots for each string. Start shallow and test with strings - you can always remove more material.

7

Final fitting and polish

Fine-tune the height, round the top edges slightly, and polish with 600 grit sandpaper for a professional finish.
