Shaping a Saddle Blank

How to fit an oversized saddle blank to your acoustic guitar

Shaping a Saddle Blank

Tools Needed

  • Fine sandpaper (220, 400, 600 grit)
  • Flat surface for sanding
  • Calipers or ruler
  • Pencil for marking
  • Straight edge

Safety Warnings

  • Work slowly - material removal is permanent
  • Test fit frequently to avoid over-sanding
  • Keep surfaces flat during sanding

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Measure the saddle slot

Measure the length, depth, and width of your bridge saddle slot with calipers.

2

Sand to width

The most critical dimension. Sand the blank sides evenly on a flat surface until it drops into the slot with light friction.

3

Trim the length

Sand the ends to match your slot length. The saddle should sit flush with the slot ends.

4

Set the height

Height determines your action. Start taller than needed and reduce gradually while testing string height.

5

Shape the crown

Gently round the top edge where strings make contact. A slight radius improves intonation and string break angle.

6

Polish

Finish with 600 grit sandpaper for smooth string contact surfaces.
